Kickin' It With The Girls

Messmer High School has taken a huge step forward with the girl's soccer program this year. From the earliest meetings in the winter and early spring to now, the girls have been on a mission: to build, together, the first ever girls soccer team at Messmer. And it has been beautiful to watch!
On Tuesday, May 17, 2011, Messmer Girl's Soccer earned its first win ever beating Kenosha Christian Life 2-0 after receiving two goals from Arionna Suttle and a defensive shutout from goalies Helen Ferch and Brittany Harmon! Head Coach and Messmer Teacher Mr. Mike Hennicke said, "I have never seen more of a team win in my life. Each of our players stepped up and played their best game of the year, together. That was difference."
This team has successfully laid the foundation for future Lady Bishops to enjoy the thrill of competition on the soccer field and learn what it takes to be true winners. Sacrifice, commitment, hard work, and respect for each other could describe this wonderful group of young women. Coaches Mr. Mike Hennicke, Mr. Charles Uihlein and Mr. Adrian Herrera are extremely proud of the progress the team has made in just a short time and are excited to see just how far the new girl's soccer program can go.

Recognition Social

School let out early last Thursday so honor roll and award recipients could gather in the cafeteria. Refreshments were served as students received envelopes with certificates of achievement and improvement.
The pride the students felt in their accomplishments was obvious on their faces. They congratulated each other, and faculty members were on hand as well to give pats on the back and to make sure no cookies went to waste.
Congratulations to our great student achievers!

The Bucks Stop Here

The General Manager of The Milwaukee Bucks, Mr, John Hammond, paid a visit to Messmer High School last week as part of the ongoing ASSIST program. ASSIST stands for Active Seniors Supporting Influencing Students Transitioning. At the monthly meetings, students go to retirement homes and other places where members of the Bucks organization facilitate discussions on topics relevant to the students' future success. Mr. Hammond addressed the topic of overcoming adversity, and many of the seniors told touching stories of loss and triumph!
The players and seniors serve as role models and inspiration for our students relating their practical advice and life experiences. Earlier in the year, a discussion was led by point guard Keyon Dooling. Senior Shameka Moore says, "The stories they tell us are moving and we heard that much of overcoming adversity is about faith in God."

Play Ball!

The baseball season is underway with the weather finally cooperating making excellent spring sport playing conditions. This year, Messmer High has both Varsity and JV baseball teams consisting of hard working, developing players. According to Varsity Baseball Coach and Computer Teacher Mr. Chad Hofmann, "We are improving but need to get better defensively to compete in our conference." Some highlights of the season so far are a great pitching outing by Junior Myles Childs against Madison who struck out six batters and allowed only two hits, and a 16-9 victory against King. Come out and support the players and coaches; see "This Week" on this blog for upcoming games.
